Poor mental health rates by country also saw a big surge during the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, a 25% global increase in anxiety and depression was reported during the pandemic.

The country that has the highest rate of anxiety is Portugal; 8.79% of residents in this European country experience anxiety. The second-highest rate on the list is in New Zealand, which has an 8.04% rate of anxiety among its residents. Not far behind in third is Brazil, with a 7.77% anxiety rate. Fourth on the list is a tie between Iran and Ireland. Both Iranian and Irish citizens have an anxiety prevalence rate of 7.62%.

Overall, the average prevalence of anxiety around the world is 3.94%. More than 120 countries around the world have anxiety rates higher than that.
